Advanced Carbonate Petrophysics From Pores to Logs

Day 1

Lithology

  • Why is petrophysics important?
  • Carbonate systems
  • Core – log lithology
  • Lithology workshop

Day one of this course will take participants through a quick review of carbonate systems and go over why petrophysics is important.  The day will continue with core-log lithology, covering the steps that are needed in calibrating core to log lithology.  Participants will also take part in a lithology workshop.

Day 2

Porosity

  • Total and effective porosity
  • Calibrating core and log porosities
  • Porosity workshops
  • Open hole porosity

On the second day, participants will learn about the different types of porosity.  They will learn how total porosity and effective porosity are determined.  Participants will also learn about the different types of open hold porosity, including neutron, density, acoustic, and NMR, as well as how to calibrate core and log porosities.  The day will also include two porosity workshops.

Day 3

Logs and Petrophysical Rock Types

  • Quicklook log analysis
  • Log workshops
  • Petrophysical rock types
  • Rock types workshop

Day three will focus on logs and petrophysical rock types.  Quicklook log analysis will be covered, along with Archie and what parameters are needed to estimate water saturation.  After the discussions of logs, attendees will participate in two logging workshops.  To end the day, participants will be introduced to petrophysical rock types and pore geometry, where they will also participate in a petrophysical rock types workshop.

Day 4

Capillary Pressure and Permeability

  • Applies capillary pressure
  • Pore throat radius
  • Capillary pressure workshop
  • Permeability and cross calibration

On the fourth day, participants will learn about capillary pressure and permeability.  First, participants will earn about applied capillary pressure, the calibration of predicted pore throat radius, and lab determination of pore throat radius.  The day will continue with a capillary pressure workshop.  Permeability and cross calibration between cores and logs will also be discussed.  At the end of the day, participants will present their capillary pressure workshop results.

Day 5

Flow Units and Well Evaluation

  • Applied flow units
  • Flow unit workshop
  • Well evaluation workshops
  • Final presentation of results

The last day of this course will teach participants about applied flow units and well evaluations.  Attendees will participate in several different workshops including workshops over both flow units and well evaluations.  At the end of this day participants will give a final presentation of their results.
